BASEMAT is an intensive mathematics refresher designed for students entering the Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Department from academic backgrounds in which mathematics may not have played a central role. The course is not intended as a catalogue of formulas to memorise, but as an introduction to mathematics as a practical language for thinking about biological systems. Across four sessions, we will move from functions, limits and derivatives to integrals, differential equations, multivariable models, matrices, Jacobians, complex numbers and eigenvalues/eigenvectors, always connecting the mathematics to examples from biotechnology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, pharmacology and population dynamics. Particular attention will be given to reading mathematical notation, interpreting graphs and equations, checking units and assumptions, and understanding what a calculation actually means. Lecture notes, handouts, biomathematical laboratory exercises and detailed solutions are provided to encourage progressive and autonomous learning. The main objective is simple: by the end of the course, mathematics should feel less like a barrier and more like a tool you can use with confidence.
